Experience Design NYC

Brooklyn, NYC

Experience design is the art of communicating information and emotion to an audience. Finding the best angle and insight can be challenging, and after experiencing the streets of New York City some new approaches have become apparent. The streets of SoHo and Brooklyn bring together architecture, design and people in an ambience of pulsating energy and inspiration. Taking these design characteristics to the web does the same for online communities. Never before has an environment inspired me so greatly to test the limits and conventions of web design… and this is the most time I’ve spent offline in a long time.

The architecture is stunning, isn’t it? My first trip to NY was the start of my love of art deco architecture style. So Andy, what’s next on the web? Do we have a replacement for rounded corners and drop-shadows?

Sure is Zac, and yes, art deco architecture is beautiful.

A replacement is certainly on the way, and your allusion to architecture is spot on. Information architecture and online layouts can draw so much influence from offline architecture, and since the visit to NYC I’ve been experimenting with basing elements of page layout and design on actual architecture and objects. I shot some photographs specifically for this purpose, and it’s amazing how well some of them suit certain page elements.

Rounded corners and drop shadows are so artificial. Authentic and emotive design actually stirs emotion and achieves communication. Let’s make the digital world more real.
