User experience design and digital strategy for Lost At E Minor, a Conversant Media publication.

Lost At E Minor has been a globally recognised pop culture publication for a number of years now. A large community of dedicated readers regard the site as a source of creative inspiration, with many readers checking in daily to trawl for ideas, trends and creative insight to power their brushstrokes, infuse their musical rhythm and create inspirational designs. My rationale behind the redesign was simple… to create a customisable, interactive gallery of inspiration and discovery that every reader can make their own.

Content is published by category with a preview of all recent posts, allowing a quick browse through all new content and the ability to dive into full posts. A horizontal navigational carousel provides a deep dive to specific categories. The middle ‘We’re Doing’ column communicates insights into everything the Lost At E Minor team is doing ‘right now’, including a new daily editorial from renowned pop culture editor Zolton Zavos. The right-hand column captures the pulse of the crowd… presenting the current giveaway and showcasing what the Lost At E Minor community is currently doing.

The colour palette is customisable and the banners rotate to give readers a sense of ownership and to customise the site however they see fit. A footer designed to push readers into relevant archived content ensures the community can find constant inspiration, and a similar concept is employed on the single post page to discover related content.

Feedback has been pleasingly positive. In the words of Zolton Zavos;

We’ve had a lot of positive feedback from readers, and no negative comments… Change can generally polarise, but it seems people are unanimously supportive of this new look.

Of the many snippets of feedback and comments we’ve received from the community, this line describes the redesign as the ideal user experience;

Something about this site just works.

Simple. User centric. Engaging. Discoverable. That’s what user experience is all about. A huge high five to the crew who made it happen, and may you all love it as much as the Lost At E Minor community does.

Update

This feedback just arrived and made me smile;

It not only has great SEO capabilities, but even more so, it’s fun to spend a ton of time on… thank you for the great layout, new interactive features and, well, for simply rockin’ my world.

That’s why we do what we do!

Gorgeous redesign of LAEM…one of my favorites, as redesigns can often alienate users. Instead, this one only encouraged new ones. Great inspiration.
