Sydney Airport Shopping

User experience design and digital strategy for Sydney Airport Shopping. Contracted by Devotion.

Boasting millions of visitors per year and currently undergoing an A$500 million redevelopment of its international terminal, Sydney Airport offers a plethora of retail choices to a diverse range of international and domestic travellers. My goal for this new website was to combine the needs of travellers, the requirements of airport retailers and the business interests of Sydney Airport to create an interface that made the diverse range of shopping options and retail offers simple.

The most read and respected travel retail information source, The Moodie Report, recently featured the Sydney Airport Shopping website as their ‘Website of the Week’. In their words;

The new-look site is sleek and boasts contemporary appeal, and is full of helpful features and services for passengers. Most of all, it provides added value for the airport’s retailers, allowing them to take centre stage and showcase their latest news and offers.

Well said. The foundation of the site is retailer content, which consists of profiles and offers. From a retailer’s profile, visitors can view the store on an interactive map, download a pdf map or add the retailer’s offers to their shopping list. The shopping list is one of the more nifty features, which allows visitors to trawl through the site, add the offers they’re interested in to their shopping list, and print or email the list of offers when they’re done. It saves time and makes the process easier – that’s what technology is for, right?

Overall, Sydney Airport Shopping is one of the most web-inclined sites The Moodie Report has seen. From interactive maps and image slideshows to online offers and competitions and a virtual assistant, the site tries to harness the potential of the Internet to its highest level.

On that note, the interactive maps are certainly worth a look. The experience moving between the maps and retailer profiles is seamless and maintains consistent navigation, which was one of the more challenging aspects of the project. Furthermore, the experience of moving from a traveller’s home or office to the airport is seamless, as the interactive maps replicate the new interactive kiosks found within the airport terminals. The website is designed to be just a step within the travelling experience, between trip and planning and flying, and is positioned to slot into a traveller’s journey and provide as much help and information as each person deems necessary. I feel it does just that, and I hope other travellers do too.

Hey Andy – congrats on the launch of the new site! So you really are doing some work while on this ‘holiday’?! I noticed you’re also setting up some WP consulting – sounds to me like you’re working to hard on this trip mate!

Thanks Stumpy, good to hear from you mate.

Yeah I’m working hard, and I love it… most days involve a decent amount of surfing and a solid stint of remote work (which I much prefer!). It’s so fresh and inspiring being in a different environment (currently the coast of Nicaragua), and the work/life balance is great. I discuss it further in an upcoming FreelanceSwitch post, I’ll blog it here when it’s published ;)

BlueSix is looking the goods, just had a good flick through your portfolio. Great stuff.
