Mixing with locals, Peru
Community ambassador Will Pate has just touched down in Africa. Titled ‘Mazava’, the goal of his latest project is to create ‘beta social software to help manage and prevent infectious disease outbreaks in Africa’. Using new web platforms to address social problems is not only brilliantly humanitarian but also increasingly viable; the web 2.0 movement has created boundless opportunity for tighly integrated and widespread community-focused networks. In the words of digital media authority Mike Walsh ‘really up until now, we have been mainly fiddling with interfaces. From here, things start to get interesting’. Networks create power, and power solves real problems. Nice timing Will, and good luck mate.

Iguassu Falls, bordering Argentia and Brazil
After several five design iterations and a handful of late nights, Lost At E Minor has finally ‘gone live’ with cleaner, bolder aesthetics and a spankin’ new chunky footer. After recently joining as Managing Editor and becoming more intimately involved with Lost At E Minor’s content, it was soon apparent that premium posts were slipping from the home page way too quickly and, being such a visually stimulating site, a conventional archive wasn’t the ideal historical showcase. Loving the concept of anchoring the site with a thumbnail-driven footer to drive traffic back in, it was then a matter of crafting the code in such a manner that thumbnails and links could be maintained through the standard WordPress interface without any hard-coding. The result is a dynamic, easily maintained footer that promotes simple navigation and improves the permanence of selected premium content. Check it out.

Having just returned after six weeks of backpacking around South America, I’m looking forward to talking about blogging, travel and more at the Sydney Weblogger Meetup on 7 Feb at the Arthouse Hotel. Sara has kindly re-arranged the meetup to coincide with Darren Rowse and others being in town for Ad-Tech, so hopefully some of the Ad-Tech crowd will pry themselves away from the official networking party to swing by for beers and a chat. See you there.
